Overview
You can now upload your own layer files to Connect to view them as overlays on your geographic maps.
These layers are uploaded as KML (Keyhole Markup Language) files for viewing – files such as boundaries lines, zone or catchment areas or even a list of other school in the area.
Creating a KML file
You can create a KML file using Google Earth or Google Maps. Follow the steps below to create a KML file using Google Maps.
- Go to https://mymaps.google.com/
- Create an account or login using your Google credentials
- Create a new map
- Select the Draw a Line tool
- Use the tool to draw a polygon on your map by clicking and moving to the next point
- To close the polygon, click on the first point
- Name your map
- Choose the border color, thickness and color transparency
- Save it
- Click the 3 dots next to your layer
- Select Export data
- Choose KMZ/KML
- Choose KML or KMZ
- Download the file
Adding your New Layer to Connect
As a School Admin, log in to Connect and follow the steps below:
- Go to Admin> Map Layers
- Click Add Layer button
Upload the KML file and Enter the desired name of the layer.
- Click Save
Tip: Make sure your layer is activated - this will allow it to appear on your geographic map
Displaying Layers
To turn on and off layers:
- Go to Analytics > Geographic
- Click the Layers button (Note: This will only appear if you have at least 1 active layer)
- Select your desired layer and it will appear on your map
Note: Layers will be retained between sessions and are user specific.
